This is the largest in my new collection of work, looking at Fragments. Sashiko is the Japanese method of stitching and patch repairing a textile until it takes on a beauty in its own right. In this painting, I kept layering and ‘repairing’ layer over layer until the final result, my marks representing stitches.

The largest work I have painted to date, Blue Balance has been a revelation for me as this year I have found using acrylic paints so difficult as the use of paints that contain plastic (acrylics) goes so deeply against my grain that it became untenable.

So I have worked with papers made with plant matter and inks made from natural products, but still wished to paint. Recently, finding a range of 100% natural mineral based paints made using solar power has ticked all my boxes and I am delighted that they have enabled me to create a whole new series of work.

Blue Balance is the first in the collection.

What can I tell you about this painting?

That I love it? is that too loud & proud? Do I care?

But it is true, I do love it. Something in this painting has brought together all my thoughts and obsession of being near water, close to the edge, feeling the pull of the natural forces.

In addition, using my new 100% pure natural mineral paints which have a delightful chalky quality rather than the plastic sensation of painting in acrylics, this has reached a pinnacle for me personally.

In this new and experimental work I am exploring my ethos of wishing to move away from synthetic materials and to work increasingly with natural elements. Working with the natural order within the Fibonacci principles I have pushed against boundaries to bring you this new and exciting work. Using Japanese papers, stitch with cotton thread and Indian ink which is made of ash, all composed onto cotton canvas.

I have loved working on this series, bringing my textile past into the present, interweaving the two modalities into one piece of work. Experimental and pushing the boundaries of what constitutes a piece of art is a place I am happy being. Using stitch on paper to create line, ink to bring some colour and juxtaposition to complete the composition. Much is considered in what might appear as simple. Im happy with that.

My whole ethos is to make art without harming the environment, making eco art with sustainable materials, I have used papers and inks made from plants on a cotton canvas stretched on a wooden frame. The Fibonacci sequence is the driving inspiration, for the design, following the natural order.

This series of work was created as I could no longer use my acrylic paints with a clear conscience. The fact that I was painting essentially with plastic just didn’t sit comfortably with me at all. So I turned to these beautiful natural papers made from plant materials and explored creating art with them. I have used Washi paper, Kozo paper, rice paper and teabag paper. Creating line stitching with linen thread and printing with Indian ink made from ash, I have used natural materials wherever possible.

The design principles I have worked with are taken from the Fibonacci sequence cementing my honouring the natural order.

I created a series of postcard sized collage using only minimal shapes to create simple, striking designs. Whole in one is clearly a play on words, to bring some fun.

Words almost defy me to describe this work, it touches such still place that words seem superfluous.

I have painted papers with Indian ink, paint and included fragments of gold. Then cut the shapes, representing presence, sound, waves.

Much time is spent contemplating the balance, juxtaposition and harmony of the composition.

And so a work is born.

I mount my collage on Arches Watercolour Paper, it is framed in a beautiful simple white wood frame with ArtGlass to prevent reflections. The whole piece is professionally float mounted within the frame and appears to be suspended, floating within the frame. It is extremely effective and adds to the simplicity of the whole for you to enjoy.

“A Japanese gardener’s work does not simply involve pruning branches and raking leaves. He has to consider the balance between house and the garden. The garden cannot be too colourful, nor can it be too plain” A quote from Before The Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi.

This quote just about sums up this work - I think about balance, juxtaposition, weight, colour and less being more when composing my collage work.

This is one of a series of four collage based around being at the beach. I love to be beside the sea, do you?

I have stripped back the experience to the bare bones of essence to represent the feeling of being on the beach. I’m Always Looking For the One refers to looking for that one stone that sits so comfortably in your hand, slips into your pocket and goes home with you as a memory of that time and place. I’m not the only one who does that am I?

There is that meditative sense to the connection to time and place, that stone or representation of it can take you back to a place of stillness.

That is the story of this work. I find my collage work is expressing my internal thoughts and feelings. Whereas my painting is more of an expression of the landscape I see externally.

Gently strolling along the shore, looking, searching, picking up this or that whatever catches your eye. That is what this piece is about.

I have distilled the internal feelings of being at the beach in these works, they are a literal translation of memories and take me back to the moment. Of being in the moment.

Jump in! Have fun. These works come from such a place inside me, they are so different from my painting, with collage I have the chance to slow down and listen to what is inside. I spend time playing with the pieces, designing slowly, contemplating, breathing slowly, feeling my way.

The pulse of the landscape came into being while I have been learning to play the piano. I became greatly influenced by the feel of the notes and when travelling through the landscape these two elements seemed to come together in my mind.

And so this work was born.

My collage work is an expression of my innermost self, it is hard to put it into words, but I create by expressing my internal feeling into the work.
