My art journey stared in textiles where specialising in working with natural materials I became a silk weaver. My love of nature and the natural world has never left me and I paint using the same ethos, using natural pigment paints from my art studio in Suffolk.

In this series of work I have reflected on the past and created a contemporary collection of dramatic abstract paintings.

This contemporary abstract painting is inspired by walking the Suffolk coast line, seeing rusting boats propped in mysterious ways, slowly decaying and revealing their hidden beauty. I love to walk in most (perhaps not all) weathers and see the colours change with the light on this beautiful sometimes wild stretch of coastline. My passion for nature extends to working with natural pigments paints and creating eco art.

Looking Back is from the Memories Collection of 10 paintings. Reflecting on trips up to Felixstowe where we walk upto Felixstowe Ferry where I love to meander around the ramshackle boat yard. There is so much inspiration there.

This is the largest in my new collection of work, looking at Fragments. Sashiko is the Japanese method of stitching and patch repairing a textile until it takes on a beauty in its own right. In this painting, I kept layering and ‘repairing’ layer over layer until the final result, with my marks representing stitches.

One of a pair of paintings designed to hang together or equally happy on their own. Time is one of my favourites, I love the sketchy, loose feel to the marks I have made. Whilst panting I was thinking about the passage of time and hence the title was born.

Tide is medium size painting, painted along side its sister Time, this is thinking about the aerial views of the land from the sky.

The largest work I have painted to date, Blue Balance has been a revelation for me as this year I have found using acrylic paints so difficult as the use of paints that contain plastic (acrylics) goes so deeply against my grain that it became untenable.

So I have worked with papers made with plant matter and inks made from natural products, but still wished to paint. Recently, finding a range of 100% natural mineral based paints made using solar power has ticked all my boxes and I am delighted that they have enabled me to create a whole new series of work.

Blue Balance is the first in the collection.

Ley Lines is a large abstract 100% mineral abstract painting inspired by walking on our farm in Suffolk. We have Ley Lines crossing our land and it feels a very special location with a peaceful atmosphere which I have portrayed into the piece.

This is a thought provoking title. What are the effects of water? What do you see?

Rather than impose my interpretations, I would prefer to leave this to the viewer to determine.

What can I tell you about this painting?

That I love it? is that too loud & proud? Do I care?

But it is true, I do love it. Something in this painting has brought together all my thoughts and obsession of being near water, close to the edge, feeling the pull of the natural forces.

In addition, using my new 100% pure natural mineral paints which have a delightful chalky quality rather than the plastic sensation of painting in acrylics, this has reached a pinnacle for me personally.

Words almost defy me to describe this work, it touches such still place that words seem superfluous.

I have painted papers with Indian ink, paint and included fragments of gold. Then cut the shapes, representing presence, sound, waves.

Much time is spent contemplating the balance, juxtaposition and harmony of the composition.

And so a work is born.

I mount my collage on Arches Watercolour Paper, it is framed in a beautiful simple white wood frame with ArtGlass to prevent reflections. The whole piece is professionally float mounted within the frame and appears to be suspended, floating within the frame. It is extremely effective and adds to the simplicity of the whole for you to enjoy.

“A Japanese gardener’s work does not simply involve pruning branches and raking leaves. He has to consider the balance between house and the garden. The garden cannot be too colourful, nor can it be too plain” A quote from Before The Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi.

This quote just about sums up this work - I think about balance, juxtaposition, weight, colour and less being more when composing my collage work.
